Draw Poker - Rules
Draw poker is the oldest surviving form of poker and
probably the most basic type of multiplayer game.
Draw Poker is played with 5 cards per player, which
are dealt face down and one at a time in a clockwise
order. The remaining cards in the pack are set aside.
In some draw poker games, there may be an ante, which
the player must put up before receiving their first
five cards. Depending on which rules the game is being
played by, the alternative is to place Blind Stakes.
If Blinds are used, one or more players will be designated
to place a bet before receiving any cards. Blinds are
usually rotated around the table so everyone ends up
paying their fair share.
In the first round of betting, the player at the dealer's
left has the option of betting first. He may either
check or bet; and if he checks, each player after him
has the same options, until any player opens by making
the first bet. Thereafter each player in turn must call,
raise, or drop, until the betting round is finished
or any table limits have been reached.
If no one opens the betting after the first five cards
are dealt, some games require that everyone antes again
(the chips from the previous ante remaining in the pot).
After the first round of betting, players may choose
to discard one or more cards, up to a maximum of either
three, four or five new cards. Some versions only permit
the exchange of 3 cards, unless the player has an ace,
in which case they may exchange four. After discarding
cards (which is not mandatory) a player will receive
new cards from the top of the pack.
After the exchange of cards, there is then a second
round of betting, after which there is a showdown. At
showdown, the player with the highest hand wins the
pot.
